LAURA KASS GHANAIAN FASHION DESIGNER BASED IN J’BURG DESIGNS FOR THE “PREMAN” WOMAN

Laura Kass is a LISOF graduate. Her Autumn/Winter collection drew inspiration from the Flamboyant fashion of the Ghanaian “Preman”, a wealthy woman or market trader, whose traditional role has evolved over time, as well as the Ashanti tribal women, and how both used cloth. Growing up seeing her aunts and mother spending fortunes on cloth for events made her wonder where she as a young women fitted into this new culture of  flamboyancy. Her collection explores the interpretation of the manifestation of this movement from her mother’s generation to her own generation. She took the cloth these women love and contemporized it for the youth. She experimented with prints placing emphasis on the play of print on print, geometric shapes verses curves, floral verses strips and colour clashing. Loving the tribal look of this collection and proud of her work as a new graduate, Laura’s designs stood out and caught my eye straight away, will definitely be looking out for more of her designs. For all the “PREMAN” women out there Laura Klass is the woman to get in touch with
